Black oxide coating is a colored finish applied to various metal components through a chemical process of oxidizing the surface. The process involves dipping the metal part into a solution typically composed of sodium hydroxide or potassium hydroxide, nitrates, and various other chemicals, which results in a semi-glossy or matte black surface finish. Apart from providing an aesthetically pleasing appearance, it also helps protect the metal part from rust and other forms of corrosion and improves its wear resistance. It applies to various metal items, such as aerospace, automotive, and machine components. It is commonly used for decorative or functional purposes in multiple industries.
Increased corrosion resistance, wear resistance, and aesthetically pleasing
Our black oxide process:
Applying this finish is a multi-step process that involves several stages to ensure the highest quality and durability.
The parts must undergo rigorous machining and deburring to ensure the surface is smooth and free of burrs or rough edges.
The components must be cleaned using alkaline solutions, which helps remove any remaining debris and residues.
Rinse the parts extensively in water to remove all traces of the alkaline solutions.
The black oxidizing step is the most critical in the process. The parts are immersed in a hot (135-145ºC) alkaline bath for 5 to 40 minutes, depending on the size of the component. This ensures that a thick oxide layer is formed on the part’s surface, providing excellent corrosion resistance and a sleek black finish.
Rinse the parts once again in water thoroughly.
Seal the oxide surface with oil, lacquer, or wax.
Lastly, add a protective coating.
Why choose black oxide for your next project?
Black oxide coating is a popular choice for metal finishes in many industries because of its numerous benefits. Firstly, it creates a unique, stylish, durable, long-lasting finish. Additionally, it offers excellent protection against rust and corrosion, making it ideal for items exposed to harsh weather conditions. It also enhances the wear resistance and hardness of the metal, making it suitable for high-stress applications. Furthermore, it is an affordable option compared to other finishes. Choosing this finish for your next project offers a combination of cosmetic appeal, protection, durability, and affordability, making it an excellent value for many applications.
