Chem Film

FINISHES

What is chem film?

Chem Film is a type of surface treatment widely used in various industries, primarily in the aerospace sector, to protect aluminum and other metals from the effects of corrosion. The process involves immersing the metal in a chemical solution that contains hexavalent chromium. The solution reacts with the metal surface, creating a thin, protective layer that actively resists corrosion and prevents further damage.

This treatment benefits the aerospace industry, where metal components are constantly exposed to harsh environmental conditions such as extreme temperatures, humidity, and saltwater. Corrosion can rapidly degrade metal components and jeopardize the safety and reliability of aircraft. Chem Film is a cost-effective solution that can significantly increase the lifespan of these critical components.

Our chem film process:

Adding a protective layer to metals, such as aluminum, involves several steps. Firstly, the metal surface must be cleaned with an alkaline solution to remove dirt, grease, or other particles. Next, the substrate should be rinsed. Then, the metal surface is etched using an acidic solution to make it rough, which helps the coating to adhere better. After that, the metal should be rinsed with water to eliminate any residual etching chemicals. A detox solution is then applied, followed by another rinse. The next step is to use a chromate conversion coating solution containing chromic acid on the metal surface. This solution reacts with the metal surface to create a protective layer that prevents corrosion and enhances adhesion for paint or other coatings that may be applied later. The excess coating should be removed by rinsing the metal with water. Finally, the metal is dried. The resulting chemically treated metal has a thin, transparent, corrosion-resistant layer.

Why choose chem film for your next project?

It is a popular finish for metal surfaces with various benefits. Firstly, it offers excellent corrosion resistance, protecting the metal from rust and other forms of degradation. Secondly, it improves adhesion for paint or other coatings applied over the surface. It can also enhance electrical conductivity and improve heat dissipation. Finally, it offers a cost-effective solution for protecting metal surfaces and improving performance. Overall, the process is worth considering if you are looking for a reliable and versatile finishing option for your next project.
